When an animal suffers an injury - no matter how minor - the tissues surrounding the injured site will become inflamed.
Inflammation is the body's natural response to injury, and is characterised by an increase in heat and sometimes swelling of the soft tissues around the injury. Major injuries are easy to identify, with inflammation producing outwardly physical signs such as profuse swelling and lameness.
Minor injuries, however,
may not produce any visible sign of injury and so
may go unnoticed. It's these hidden injuries which
could develop into something more serious if they're
not treated promptly.
ScanIT is a very accurate
yet inexpensive infrared thermometer. With frequent
use, ScanIT will help you develop a 'temperature map' of
your healthy animal.
When you know what's normal
you can readily identify injuries, due to the inflammatory
response, and begin laser therapy even before they
visibly affect your horse. Laser therapy is renowned
for its ability to reduce inflammation and promote
healing.
Having a picture of what's
normal will also help guide you during rehabilitation,
as you can monitor the progress of treatments and
know when the animal is ready to go back into work,
how hard you can work it, and when it's really healed
and not just out of pain.
